Participation through Budget Councils in Kaduna

Thematic Area: Democracy and Good Governance

Overview

GAT used Endowment support to enhance community participation in Local governance by mobilizing constituents to engage elected representatives and government officials on local governance and development priorities in Kaduna State.
This also aims to strengthen the communities abilities to engage newly elected officials to hold them accountable to the needs and priorities of their constituents. Series of advocacy visits were conducted in each of the three (3) LGA and Kaduna, and preparatory meetings to educate community members on state and local government Budget processes, and its initiative to form Community Budgeting Councils (CBCs), community elected liaison bodies tasked with conveying community governance and development priorities to government officials. The preparatory workshops will have sessions on the budget cycle, assessing LGA budgets and avenues for community participation in budget development and implementation.
